What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

The Unbelievable sets a program of conviction and company running in you. You learn to hold your belief in what seems out of reach even when others tell you to shrink, and you learn to turn that belief toward someone else who is afraid. The promise to stand beside a frightened person and walk with them through the fear becomes the steady center.

As that program runs, your nerve steadies and widens. You keep your footing under pressure to tone yourself down, and you extend a hand to someone struggling for air. The reaching toward another, more than the repeated insistence on belief, is what lifts you, and you grow a little braver and less alone as it carries you onward.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

The Unbelievable installs a program of conviction and companionship across a population. A culture learns to hold belief in what seems out of reach against pressure to shrink, and to point that belief toward the frightened by promising to walk beside them through their fear. Standing with the afraid becomes the shared center of the song.

The symptoms spread as steadier collective nerve. People hold their footing when told to tone themselves down and extend a hand to others struggling for air. The reaching toward one another, more than the repeated insistence on belief, is what carries a population forward, and a shared courage grows as fewer people face their fear alone.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
