Stay

Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko

First surfaced on Billboard Year-End Hot 100

What is this song about?

A two-voice plea for a partner to remain, the narrator naming a fever-like pull, admitting she needed saving, and noticing that the damaged one is him.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Stay on repeat develops a frank relationship to their own dependency. The material states the need without ornament and identifies the narrator as the one requiring rescue, and with repetition the listener comes to treat attachment-need as something that can be said aloud. Neediness becomes describable.

Continued exposure supports honesty about what a person wants from a partner. The individual grows readier to name an emptiness they expect another to close, and the circling structure keeps that recognition in view. Insight settles at the level of admission.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that circulates Stay through its shared repertoire speaks more plainly about dependence inside intimate attachment. Communal singing of the plea makes the request to be kept an ordinary utterance, and the admission of needing rescue enters common speech with the shame removed. Vulnerability becomes sayable.

At the population level, people describe their attachments in terms of need supplied, and the expectation that partners complete one another gains vocabulary. Recognition of the pattern spreads faster than any practice for changing it. Populations name dependence and leave it where it stands.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
