Riptide (Acoustic)

Buoyant stream-of-consciousness reverie of freedom and rule-breaking, riding waves and watching animals live free across a self-styled liberation

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

Riptide installs a pleasant sense of being unbound: rules are for other people, the world opens to let you ride, and freedom is something you already carry. The program is buoyant self-liberation, a feeling of being chosen and over it, with the imagery doing the lifting instead of any settled idea.

You float for a few minutes and then come back to the same shore. The mood is nice while it lasts, loose and a little untethered, but nothing lands or takes root. You are not moved through anything; you are simply carried along the surface and set back down where you started.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

Riptide offers a population a loose dream of being unbound: rules loosened, the world made friendly, the self quietly elevated as chosen and free. The shared program is mood more than message, a diffuse sense of liberation that gestures at the cosmic without naming anything a culture could hold onto or build with.

The symptoms are gentle and shallow. People feel briefly lifted, a little freer in the moment, and then return unchanged to their actual lives. Nothing is degraded and nothing is genuinely grown; the freedom stays a feeling that passes. A culture fed only on this drifts pleasantly and settles nowhere.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
