What is this song about?

A chant that answers one woman's daily ailments with a pastry and names another for acting respectable while keeping a lot of men around her

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Mirage on repeat rehearses the reduction of a woman to a piece of gossip. The material chants one woman's complaints away with a snack and hands another's private history to a room, so the listener's threshold for repeating what is said about a person falls. A name becomes a punchline.

Regard for the people being talked about declines under repeated exposure. The individual grows readier to trade a reputation for a moment of shared amusement, and sympathy for the woman under discussion thins. Being talked about stops registering as a cost.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes Mirage into its common repertoire converts private reputation into public entertainment. Communal chanting of a named woman's supposed count of partners establishes sexual accounting as a normal thing to sing at a stranger, and a woman's stated discomfort gets answered with a snack. Gossip acquires a chorus.

Populations that absorb the pattern police women's histories more casually and more publicly, and the damage from being named falls entirely on her. Amusement supplies the cover. Communities lose the reticence that once sat between knowing something and singing it.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
