Fractals

Chad Lewine

What is this song about?

Every person and thing read as a fractal of one shared light, identity deeper than the surface and the other folded into the self, a single pattern pouring out forever

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Fractals on repeat comes to experience personal identity as one instance of a shared substrate. The song dissolves the boundary between self and other, presenting each person as a single facet of one luminous pattern, and the listener's sense of being a discrete personality yields to a sense of participation in something continuous. Selfhood is relocated beneath the surface of face and role.

The presentation is a reduction in felt separateness. Continued exposure weakens identification with surface attributes and strengthens the perception of others as instances of the same identity. The individual grows disposed to treat connection as the baseline condition of existence.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that incorporates Fractals into circulation regards its members as expressions of a common substrate. The population's operative unit of identity migrates from the bounded individual toward a shared field, and the perception of others as fundamentally separate or foreign weakens. Difference is taken as variation within one pattern.

At the population level the pattern presents as a diminished basis for othering. A people grows less able to sustain the sharp in-group boundaries on which rivalry and exclusion depend, and cooperation acquires the standing of a natural default. The collective sense that one order is shared across all members strengthens.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
