What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays dance around it on repeat acquires a method for postponing a conversation indefinitely. The material pairs full knowledge that a relationship is finished with an agreement to say nothing about it, and the listener treats clear sight as a thing that can wait until morning. Knowing stops obliging anything.

Willingness to sit inside an unresolved ending increases with repetition. The individual grows readier to reach for a drink and a warm body when a decision is due, and the interval between recognizing an ending and acting on it lengthens. Avoidance acquires the warmth of a plan.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes dance around it into its common repertoire treats the unfinished ending as a comfortable place to live. Communal singing of two people agreeing to leave the truth unspoken establishes avoidance as a tender act, and the expectation that a separation be talked through weakens. Silence acquires a romantic form.

Populations that absorb the pattern show longer tails on relationships both parties know are over, and alcohol takes up more of the work conversation used to do. Clarity stops obliging anyone to act. Communities grow patient with people who keep returning to a door they already closed.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
