Better

Chad Lewine

A collective call to heal a suffering Earth, naming poisoned oceans and acid rain and urging everyone together to take control and make things right.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

Better widens your sense of who you are until it includes the living planet around you. You stop treating the damage as someone else's problem and start hearing your own choices inside the larger one. The song hands you a simple belief: you are part of the repair, and the repair is possible.

So your sense of agency grows. You feel less small in the face of something this big, because the song keeps insisting the change starts with people choosing together. You carry a steadier hope and a readiness to act, the conviction that what comes next is still yours to shape.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

Better trains a population to read the planet's harm as a shared inheritance rather than a distant headline. It dissolves the line between my problem and our problem, so a culture begins to see pollution, fouled water, and a poisoned sky as something people caused together and can answer together. The song installs one governing belief: the future is not fixed, and a people choosing differently can repair it.

So a culture grows more willing to act in common. People feel ownership of the damage and of the cure at once, and resignation loses its grip. A population carries forward the steady sense that the work belongs to everyone and that the outcome is still open.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
